I think the more the mature the student the more they are aware and driven they are to excel
If students have a clear idea what they want to do then it leads to an increase in motivation - especially for mature students.
Vocational degrees mean poor academic motivation
In our group, a lot of professional qualifications, so aspirations are often aligned to the degree field (broadly).
I’m not sure that out first years are clear about their identity or aspirations- they love History and hope that the programme will be generally useful in securing them meaningful work
What the aspiration will define identity which would influence outcome
A mismatch between expectations and reality can be demotivating
Diverse backgrounds, nationalities and confidence levels. Poor attendance common.
They focus more in applied concepts that should make them ready for the job market.
They are career driven, as our degree is geared towards a specific profession, they are often more engaged with the placement rather than taught sessions.
Creates motivation and, if they meet students with similar motivation and interests can form a sense of belonging and community
Imposter syndrome
I just try to Do/be the best that I can be and signpost, make reference to useful literature, link to careers etc. link to competencies etc.
Many international students are investing so much money to come here there is pressure to achieve well.
Even on courses that are tied to a profession, students can sometimes take a strategic approach- doing the minimum they need to in order to get through
